Nas is a rap artist who recently released an album. This album triggered a lot of discussions/arguments amongst Hip Hop artists, columnists, and fans. It was not the songs, nor the lyrics that had such an affect on the community. It was the title of the album: Hip Hop Is Dead. Some agreed, some disagreed, & most were insulted.
Now I do not agree with Nas when he says, ‘Hip Hop is Dead.’ It still lives, breathes, and occasionally gets released, yet its popularity continues to decrease. It is important to note that the ‘new’ Rap movement does not represent true Hip Hop. Mike Jones, Chamillionaire, Young Jeezy, D4L, & T.I. represent what I like to call ‘Commercial Rap’ or ‘Pop Rap.’ If anyone wants to argue this point, first listen to ‘Shake That Laffy Taffy’ by D4L and come back to me. Anyway, this form of rap is the only form that is heard by main stream Canada. It’s on your radio, on your mix’s, and at the clubs you go to….Especially the clubs. Therefore, when Nas declares Hip Hop Is Dead, I can understand his point. But we must understand what seemingly looks like a ‘declaration’ is simply a point. A point for us, me & you, to see that Hip Hop is in a crisis state and may be slowly dying.
It is also important to note that some older artists and even some Rookies are continuing to maintain Rap’s truest form. Lupe Fiasco’s album “Food & Liquor,” The Game’s album “Doctor’s Advocate,” & most importantly Nas’s Album “Hip Hop Is Dead” are all albums that should be considered classics. If you like Rap/Hip Hop check those CD’s out. Listen to their production, and more importantly, listen and understand their lyrics. They will show you that Hip Hop Isn’t Dead, just hidden.

Underground hip-hop is where it's at these days. Check out Immortal Technique. He'll blow your mind.
As for the local scene, Victoria has always been thriving. Saw a concert by Ishkan the other day... He's worth the shitty ferry trip to get there.
:s
Lupe Fiasco's album is amazing! It's a fresh take on hip hop.
